September 2008 President’s Corner Welcome Back Everyone! It seems forever since we’ve had a meeting. That is not to say that it hasn’t been a busy summer – with activities at the national, state and local levels. It has been especially busy at our house, getting ready for the National Convention as well as supporting our state and local candidates. The National Convention was exciting and I am anxious to talk about it at our September 24th meeting. John Brady and Greg Hastings will be our speakers and after lunch we will have a special presentation by some of our members and guests. It is my hope that you are all doing your part to keep the Republicans in office. We need you to work the polls, the offices and make calls. If we all pitch in and get our friends and neighbors to pitch in, we will truly be able to make a difference in the outcome of the November election. Our October fashion show will be the perfect time to introduce a friend to our organization. This to be a fund raiser and it will be a fun time and we hope you will bring friends. Membership and participation is everyone’s job. I would be remiss if I did not offer prayers to Eunice Rollings and Nancy Norton for the loss of their husbands this summer. It is sad and difficult to lose a loved one. The regular DFRW meeting will be on Tuesday, September 16th at the Federation Building in Dover. If you would like to attend, please let me know. In addition to the meeting it is an opportunity for good friendship – we carpool and have lunch following the meeting. It is an open meeting and we welcome you to attend. Tom Ross, State Chairman, will be the speaker. Until then, I wish you the best! Suzanne Sams, President
September Luncheon Speakers Before lunch 41st District candidate, Representative Greg Hastings and Recorder of Deeds candidate John Brady will speak. After lunch there will be a panel discussion on “Suggested answers to misinformed Democrats from three Republican women: Elizabeth Roche, former Director of Winning Women Valerie Woods, DFRW President Patty Finlayson, Creator of a PAC – C.U.R.L. – Coalition of United Republican Ladies Statements made by “Dilly and Dolly Democrat” It portends to be an informative and fun discussion – you won’t want to miss it! Fall Fashion Show Change is in the air! We Republican women believe in change. So, here comes a Fashion Show where we can change our clothes. The second annual fall fashion show will take place at our October 22, 2008 meeting where we can look for change to our wardrobes with the help of Twila Farrell’s of Rehoboth designs and Judy Demeno’s of Coolsprings Cottage Fashions of Lewes. Beautiful clothes and how to wear them in different ways to expand your wardrobe. We will learn how to make one outfit into different looks. This is going to be a fund raiser for our candidates. Mark your calendars and plan to attend and bring guests. Republican National Convention “Our Club was well represented at the recent vibrant and exciting Convention and while we will hear directly from them here are some initial reactions from each of them to share: “What an exciting Convention!! Every minute was packed with new and wonderful experiences. Our Delaware Delegation was such fun. We stayed downtown near so many places, and were bused to and from the Convention in St. Paul. Each day was filled with speakers and entertainment. The first was a breakfast with Michael Steele and Jon Reynolds (a fellow American in the Hanoi prison camp) and our own Mike Castle. Then a few hours to sightsee and prepare for the first day in session. We had only a short session due to Tropical Storm Hannah. Tuesday, we were privileged to hear Sarah Palin for the first time. What a wonderful woman! Then we saw John McCain and Cindy, too. Wednesday, we were bused to the town of Stillwater for a little R & R. We were taken on a Paddle Wheeler down the St. Croix River and had a great brunch and cocktails, then on to the little town for a quick tour and a stop at a winery, back to our hotel to change and get back on the bus for the evening session. A lot of shopping, a fashion show at Macy’s put on by the Regents and Capitol Regents. A huge breakfast at a fancy restaurant, a lunch at a famous Irish Pub and cocktails at a jazz club, we were so busy socializing at several receptions, it is a wonder we can still walk around! We heard Lee Greenwood singing his patriotic songs, Trace Adkins sang the National Anthem, before John McCain’s speech. I hope you were all able to hear the speeches on TV. There were so many new people speaking and I am sure they will be heard a lot more often in the coming year. Each night after the Convention, we retired to the Delaware hospitality room where we had a late supper and watched the critics on CNN and the plaudits on FOX News. Every one loved Sarah and John. This is what we are working for! A good President and Vice President! John McCain is the total American and he is what we need to bring our Country forward. We don’t look back only straight ahead!” Suzanne Sams “Being at the 2008 National Republican Convention was a unique opportunity to be a part of history! The introduction of Sarah Palin as the Vice Presidential running mate for the Republican ticket sent the Convention attendees into an extraordinary euphoria…a WINNING TICKET!!! Pairing the maverick side of Sarah Palin along with the maverick side of John McCain will definitely shake up Washington!” Mary Spicer “I had a wonderful time! It was great to feel a part of history being made and being caught up in such excitement over our candidates. This was my first Convention and really hope that in four years I will be a delegate again. Priscilla Rakestraw did a magnificent job putting it all together for our Delaware delegation. Everything went smoothly, on time and what a hospitality room!!!!!!” Lauretta Alberti Family Picnic Mark your calendars for a fun filled family Sunday afternoon! On the Lighter Side If there is one thing most Americans agree on, it is that the current price of gasoline is very high. But it is cheap when compared to the $8.00 to $10.00 a gallon car owners in Europe and Japan pay. Compared to what Americans pay for other liquid products that we use every day, gasoline seems inexpensive. We can be thankful, for example, that our cars do not run on any of these products: Diet Snapple – 16oz., $1.29 = $10.32/gallon Lipton Iced Tea – 16oz., $1.19 = $9.52/gallon Gatorade – 20oz., $1.59 = $10.17/gallon Ocean Spray – 16oz., $1.25 = $10.00/gallon Vicks Nyquil – 6oz., $8.35 = $178.12/gallon Pepto-Bismol – 4oz., $3.85 = $123.20/gallon Scope Mouthwash – 1oz., $.99 = $84.48/gallon Evian Bottled Water – 9oz., $1.49 = $21.19/gallon A Harvard University study found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year, while the American Medical Association found that Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year. This means that Americans, on average, get about 41 miles to the gallon. Kind of makes you proud to be an American. June 2008 President’s Corner Many thanks go to those ladies who worked so hard on the “Bit of Broadway” production! What a team they are. The money we earned through this is going to help our candidates win those Republican seats. It seems like a very long campaign season and there is still a long way to go. We need everyone's participation to ensure their wins. I am looking for you to volunteer your time and telephone to get the needed votes. We have so many of our members who are going through some rough times with illnesses. Please send them your prayers and thoughts.
